Slides tools vs template libraries
Slides tools create or restyle decks. Template libraries such as Slidesgo and SlidesCarnival hand you masters for Google Slides and PowerPoint. You often want both: a library for layouts, a tool when Brand Kit, AI draft, or design-system components are the real job.
This page is a map, not a scorecard with invented prices. Plans change. Verify licenses. Pick the home where the file will actually live—Drive, Office, Canva, or Figma—then pick the library or maker that feeds that home.
Categories
- Native editors: Google Slides, PowerPoint (Microsoft Create for official themes)
- Design suites: Canva, Figma kits
- AI makers: Gamma, Beautiful.ai
- Libraries (not software, still in the shortlist): Slidesgo, SlidesCarnival, SlideModel, PresentationGO
Native editors
Google Slides wins when comments, version history, and school or work accounts already sit in Drive. Import a theme with Theme → Import theme from a PPTX or another Slides file. PowerPoint wins when the workplace standard is PPTX and you need the strongest Slide Master. Apply themes from the Design tab (Browse for Themes: .thmx / .potx) or open a PPTX and edit Slide Master.
Importing Slides into PowerPoint (or the reverse) is a transfer. Fonts and animations often need cleanup. Do not plan a weekly conversion ritual.
Design suites
Canva is a huge template mall plus Brand Kit plus Magic Studio. Generous free plan; paid features exist—check current tiers. Export PPTX / PDF / video. Present from Canva when you can. It is not native Slides collab. Workflow: Canva for presentation themes. Compare: Canva vs Google Slides.
Figma and Figma Slides (launched around 2024) are for design-system decks: components, variables, present in Figma. PPTX import exists, but fonts often go to Inter; tables, videos, diagrams, and animations are frequently dropped. Best when the deck is a designed artifact for product teams, not weekly Drive editing. Start on the Figma slides hub.
AI makers
Gamma: prompt-to-deck, web cards, weak PPTX fidelity versus the web view. Beautiful.ai: Smart Slides that auto-reflow, brand consistency, typically a trial then paid (no lasting free plan in the usual sense), cleaner PPTX export than Gamma, less flexible for unusual layouts. Neither is a template mall like Slidesgo. Neither replaces Slide Master if Office is the standard.
Decision table
| Situation | Start here |
|---|---|
| Co-edit in Drive this week | Google Slides + Slidesgo / SlidesCarnival |
| IT-safe workplace PPTX | PowerPoint + Microsoft Create |
| The slide is a dense diagram | SlideModel (or PresentationGO first) |
| Marketing / event polish, Brand Kit | Canva; present or export PDF |
| Design-system launch deck | Figma Slides |
| Prompt-to-outline tonight | Gamma (present web) or Beautiful.ai |
| Only need hex for an existing master | Coolors / Realtime Colors |
Official vs catalog: Microsoft Create vs Slidesgo. Talks vs diagrams: Slidesgo vs SlideModel.
When to skip extra software
Skip a new SaaS editor when a Slidesgo master already solves the talk. Skip AI makers when legal will only open a .pptx from a named employee and you have no time to clean export. Skip Figma when nobody on the team opens Figma daily. Skip Canva when Drive comments are the workflow. Skip paying SlideModel until free diagram sources fail.
Palette generators are not slides software. They do not ship masters. Use them after you have a home for the file, then paste hex into Theme → Colors.
Practical pairing
A common stack that does not fight itself:
- Pick the editor of record (Slides, PowerPoint, Canva, or Figma).
- Pull layouts from one library that speaks that editor.
- Recolor with Theme colors / Slide Master / Brand Kit / variables—not a third tool’s conflicting navy.
- Export only at the end, once, if you must leave the editor of record.
Browsing: Canva slides, Figma slides, Google Slides hub, PowerPoint hub.
Worked stacks (copy one)
School or ops, Drive already open. Google Slides + Slidesgo or SlidesCarnival. Theme → Import theme when you apply a look to an existing file. No Canva. No Gamma unless you need a private outline you will rebuild.
Managed Office workplace. PowerPoint + Microsoft Create. Slide Master. SlideModel only after diagrams fail. Canva only if marketing presents from Canva and never emails PPTX for edits.
Campaign plus social plus PDF. Canva Brand Kit. Present or export PDF. If someone demands Drive comments, you picked the wrong week to switch tools—or you restart in Slides.
Product launch, design org. Figma Slides, variables, present in Figma. Rebuild a Slides or PPT master from tokens only if legal requires a file. Do not import PPTX and hope.
Blank page, tonight, link is OK. Gamma for a web draft, or Beautiful.ai if you want reflow and can pay after a trial. Export PPTX only if the inbox is Office, then clean. Gamma’s web view is the product; its PPTX is not.
You already have a master and hate the colors. Coolors + Realtime Colors + WebAIM. Not new software.
What “best” is not
Best is not the longest feature list. Best is the editor your collaborators can open without a new account, plus the library that speaks that editor. Adding Gamma and Canva and Figma and Slidesgo to the same week is how navies multiply and Friday becomes conversion night.
Pick the home first. Add at most one library and one color tool. Export once.
If procurement asks for a single approved stack, write it down: editor, library, palette source, export rule. Themesei’s hubs exist so that list has URLs: Google Slides, PowerPoint, Canva, Figma.
