What Canva is (as a slides tool)

Canva is design software teams use as a slides tool: a huge template mall, Brand Kits, Magic Studio / AI assists, and exportable decks (PPTX, PDF, video). It is not a Google Slides theme library and it is not native Google Slides collaboration. Slidesgo and SlidesCarnival still win when the file must live in Drive as a native Slides theme.

The free plan is generous enough for many internal decks. Paid tiers unlock more Brand Kit control and Magic Studio features. We do not quote prices. Verify the current plan and the license on each template—free in the editor is not automatically free to resell or to strip for a client kit.

When Canva beats a Slides template

  • Marketing or event decks that need a tight visual lock-up
  • Non-designers who need Brand Kit guardrails so hex and type cannot drift
  • You will present from Canva or export PDF, not co-edit in Slides all week
  • Social-first launch stories where the slide is closer to a poster than a Slide Master

Watch export fidelity. Charts, custom fonts, and tightly grouped objects are where PPTX and Slides imports get ugly. If the recipient must edit in Drive, starting in Slides with a library theme is cleaner than a Canva round-trip.

Brand Kit, templates, and Magic Studio

Brand Kit is the reason Canva feels like a theme system. Lock logos, fonts, and colors once. Templates then inherit those tokens instead of each teammate picking a close-enough navy. That is a different mechanism from PowerPoint’s Slide Master or Google Slides’ Theme builder, but the job is the same: stop visual drift.

The template mall is the other half. You are not building a master from a blank 16:9. You are picking a designed sequence and swapping copy. Magic Studio and other AI features help with first-pass text, image cleanup, and layout suggestions. Treat those as drafts. The Brand Kit still has to survive a projector.

Export paths (and why import is messy)

DestinationPathWhat to expect
Present liveCanva PresentCleanest. Stay here if you can.
PDF / videoExportGood for leave-behinds and social cuts
PowerPointExport PPTXFonts and charts often need cleanup
Google SlidesExport PPTX or PDF, then importNot native collab. Layout drift is normal

There is no honest “sync to Google Slides and keep editing as if you started there.” Import is a transfer. If ten people must comment in Drive this afternoon, start from the Google Slides hub.

Canva vs nearby slides tools

ToolUse it when
CanvaBrand Kit + marketing/event polish, present or export
Google Slides + SlidesgoNative Drive editing
PowerPoint + Microsoft CreateWorkplace PPTX / Slide Master
GammaPrompt-to-deck first draft, web cards
Beautiful.aiSmart layouts that reflow as you type
FigmaDesign-system slides for product teams

Gamma’s PPTX fidelity is weaker than its web deck. Beautiful.ai typically exports cleaner PPTX than Gamma but is less of a template mall. Figma Slides (launched around 2024) is for componentized kits, not Brand Kit marketing.

When to skip Canva

Skip Canva when the org standard is “comment in this Drive file.” Skip it when legal wants an Office-native .potx. Skip it when the deck is a weekly operating review that five people edit on phones inside Slides. Skip it when you only needed hex for an existing master—that is Coolors, not a new SaaS editor.

Also skip a Canva-to-Slides conversion as your default pipeline. Present from Canva or export PDF. Convert only when the other tool is mandatory, then budget cleanup time.

A week that belongs in Canva

The campaign launches Thursday. You need a 12-slide story, a square social cut, and a PDF one-pager that matches. Brand Kit already has the navy and the type. You pick a presentation template with section breaks, swap copy, present from Canva on Thursday, and export PDF for the leave-behind. Nobody opens PowerPoint. Nobody asks for Drive comments on slide 7.

That week is Canva’s job. The opposite week—budget review, five editors, school accounts—is Google Slides plus Slidesgo. Forcing Canva into the second week is how PPTX imports become a second job.

Magic Studio will draft headlines. It will not know your legal disclaimer or the number finance has not approved. Keep AI in the first pass. Keep Brand Kit as the source of truth. If Figma already holds the tokens, copy them in. Do not generate a second navy in Coolors unless you are exploring accents on purpose.

Common mistakes

Starting in Canva “for speed,” then promising native Slides collab. Exporting PPTX the night before a client edit session. Using a free template without reading whether commercial use is allowed. Building charts as decorated objects that die on export instead of linking real data. Maintaining Brand Kit, a Slides theme, and a PowerPoint master with three different navies.

Present or PDF first. Convert last. One token set.
