This is a tools comparison, not two template malls
Google Slides is the editor. Canva is a slides tool with its own templates, Brand Kits, Magic Studio / AI assists, and export (PPTX, PDF, video). Libraries like Slidesgo and SlidesCarnival feed into Slides. Comparing Canva to “Google Slides templates” as if they were the same product is how teams pick the wrong home for the file.
Canva has a generous free plan; paid Brand Kit and Magic Studio features exist. We do not list prices. Verify the current plan and each template license. Google Slides is included with a Google account; the theme still comes from a library or Theme builder.
The Canva hub is Canva slides. The Slides side of this comparison lives on the Google Slides hub.
Quick comparison
| Google Slides | Canva | |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Drive | Canva |
| Theme system | Theme builder / Import theme | Brand Kit + templates |
| Collab | Comments, history, school/work accounts | Canva sharing |
| Export | PPTX, PDF | PPTX, PDF, video |
| Best first use | Weekly co-edit | Marketing / event artifact |
Pick Google Slides + a theme library if
- Comments, version history, and school or work accounts already live in Drive
- You need Theme → Import theme from a
.pptxor a copied deck - IT will not bless another SaaS editor
- Ten people must edit the same file this afternoon
- The last mile is still Slides, even if someone sketched in Canva
Start at the Google Slides hub. Grab Slidesgo or SlidesCarnival. Recolor with Theme → Colors. If you only needed hex, Coolors is enough—do not open Canva for a palette.
Importing a Canva PPTX into Slides is messy. Fonts, charts, and tight groups drift. Starting in Slides is cleaner for collaboration than a round-trip.
Pick Canva if
- Brand Kit fonts and colors should be impossible to break
- The deliverable is PDF, social, or a Canva present link
- You would rather not fight Slide Master
- The deck is a marketing or event lock-up, not a weekly ops review
- Non-designers need guardrails more than Drive comments
Read Canva for presentation themes. Present from Canva when you can. Export PPTX only when the recipient must open Office, then budget a cleanup pass in PowerPoint.
If you want AI-first drafts instead, look at Gamma (prompt-to-deck, web cards, weak PPTX vs web) or Beautiful.ai (smart reflow, trial then paid, usually cleaner PPTX than Gamma).
Collaboration and import honesty
Google Slides collaboration is the product: simultaneous edit, comments on a shape, version history, domain sharing. Canva collaboration is real, but it is a different room. There is no native “this is a Slides file inside Drive that Canva is editing.”
Paths that fail in practice:
- Design in Canva all week, export PPTX every Friday for Drive comments, re-import. Fonts rot.
- Design in Slides, rebuild in Canva for “polish,” then expect stakeholders to edit Slides again.
- Assume Figma Slides import will save a Canva PPTX. Figma often maps fonts to Inter and drops tables, videos, diagrams, and animations.
Pick one editor of record. Export once at the end if you must leave it.
When to skip both (or skip the fight)
Skip Canva when legal wants an Office-native .potx—use Microsoft Create and PowerPoint’s Design tab / Slide Master. Skip Slides when nobody in the room has a Google account that can edit. Skip both as “the diagram tool”—SlideModel is for when the slide is the diagram.
Skip treating this as a template-mall bake-off. Slidesgo vs Canva templates is a category error. Slidesgo is a master for Slides. Canva templates live in Canva.
Practical rule
If the file must be co-edited in Drive, Google Slides + a library. If the file is a designed artifact you will present or export from Canva, Canva. If you are unsure, ask who will change a number on slide 12 tomorrow. That person’s editor wins.
More software context: best slides tools. Official PPT vs catalog: Microsoft Create vs Slidesgo.
Worked scenarios
Weekly ops review, five editors, school or work Google accounts. Google Slides. Slidesgo or SlidesCarnival. Theme → Import theme if you apply a look to last week’s file. Canva is a detour.
Campaign launch, Brand Kit, PDF and social cuts, you present. Canva. Present from Canva. Export PDF. Do not promise Drive comments.
Client wants an editable file Friday and they live in Office. Neither tool is the native home. Export from Canva or download PPTX from Slides, then clean in PowerPoint. If this is every Friday, switch the editor of record to PowerPoint plus Microsoft Create.
Design critique of a product launch. Neither. Figma. Canva vs Slides is the wrong argument.
You only hate the colors. Neither. Coolors into the theme you already have.
Cost of picking wrong
Wrong Canva: Friday night PPTX cleanup, missing charts, a teammate who cannot comment in Drive, a license surprise on a “free” template. Wrong Slides: a deck that looks like a default theme, no Brand Kit guardrails, marketing exporting random PNGs on top of Theme builder.
Wrong both: a loop. Canva → PPTX → Slides → comments → “can you make it look like Canva again.”
Pick the person who edits slide 12 tomorrow. Their editor wins. Write it down so the next campaign does not reopen the argument. If nobody edits slide 12—if you only present and ship PDF—Canva is the simpler default. If everybody edits slide 12, Slides is the simpler default. The middle (“we will export”) is where weeks disappear.
