Two free libraries. One default for “make this readable.” One default for “make this teachable.” Neither asks you to open an account before you can test a file, which is why they sit next to each other in so many teaching and nonprofit folders—and why people confuse them when they should not.
How to choose in 30 seconds
Ask: will this file be reused every week as a shell? If yes, SlidesMania. If you need one readable deck for a meeting, a nonprofit update, or an event, SlidesCarnival.
Ask a second question: will a grown-up who does not teach judge this file? If yes, start Carnival. Mania’s color and stickers read as school even when the content is a grant report.
Still unsure? Keep Slidesgo as the third bookmark for illustrated niches you cannot find in either free set. Full three-way context: Slidesgo vs SlidesCarnival and Slidesgo vs SlidesMania.
When Carnival wins
You are building a house theme for a shared Drive. You will empty the sample slides and reuse the master all year. You need title, section, and two-column layouts that survive long headlines. You will change two hex values and ship. You do not want an account or a download meter.
Carnival also wins for parent nights and staff PD that should look calm. Teachers sometimes over-index on Mania because it is “for school,” then present a sticker-heavy file to adults who came for logistics. A quiet master is not anti-education. It is anti-noise.
When Mania wins
The file is the lesson. Weekly tabs, warm-up boxes, choice boards, digital notebooks, “I can” lines. Students will type into the same structure every Monday. You need the sample sequence, not just a look—so you Make a copy, you do not only import a theme.
Mania also wins when a student needs a structured notebook on day one of a unit and a blank Slides file would stall them. The playfulness is a feature for that audience. It is a bug in a board packet.
License and import habits that apply to both
Read the license on the template. Credit or attribution is commonly requested. Terms on free libraries have changed; do not recite last year’s rules. You still may not resell the master. Sharing a filled classroom file with your students is usually the intended path—confirm it. Uploading the empty template to a public internet Drive is usually not.
Import path: official Slides copy or PPTX → Theme → Import theme on an existing outline, or work in the copy. Recolor Theme → Colors. Keep one heading font and one body font. If you import Mania onto a Carnival deck, you get a franken-theme. One theme per file. Theme versus template explains the fork.
Two folders, not one bookmark
Put Carnival in a folder named “House / meetings.” Put Mania in a folder named “Teach / notebooks.” If those files live in the same pile, someone will open the wrong default under time pressure. That is how a grant report ships with rainbow tabs, and how a Monday warm-up ships looking like a consulting appendix.
A practical split for a school or nonprofit Drive:
- Carnival house theme: all-hands, board lite, parent logistics, staff PD.
- Mania shells: weekly lesson, unit notebook, student portfolio, choice board.
- Optional third: Slidesgo for the illustrated showcase; PresentationGO for one process slide dropped into the house theme.
Neither library needs to win a brand war. They need to stay out of each other’s folders.
Quality and license pass (same for both)
Open the official page. Copy or download PPTX. Read the license the same day—credit language on free libraries has moved before. Paste a long headline. Check a section divider. Recolor Theme → Colors. If you teach from student accounts, open the file once on a student account; fonts disappear there first.
Carnival usually needs less sticker removal. Mania usually needs more, on purpose. Budget five minutes to delete decoration that fights body text in a notebook you will stare at all term.
If legal or a funder will see the file, Carnival is the safer visual default even when the content is “about school.” Mania remains the safer workflow default when the audience is students who must type into a structure.
Import versus copy still matters. Empty-and-reuse → import Carnival. Keep-the-tabs → copy Mania. Mixing those buttons is how people decide both sites “broke” their deck.
When to skip both
Need a huge illustrated mall → Slidesgo. Need leftover industry volume → SlideEgg. Need a process diagram, not a theme → PresentationGO. Need a prompt-written draft → Gamma. Need Brand Kit lock-up → Canva.
