This is the comparison most people want after they search themes for Google Slides and land on both brands. They are not rivals in the sense that one replaces the other. They are two different default bookmarks.

Pick Slidesgo if

You need education, medical, pitch, or seasonal packs with matching icons. You can name the niche out loud—“pediatric grand rounds,” “back-to-school night,” “seed pitch with illustrated metaphors”—and you want the catalog to meet you there. Creating an account does not bother you. You might pay to skip limits if the free tier’s monthly-style cap (often reported as a few downloads) gets in the way.

Slidesgo is also the better first open when the talk should look like a themed poster and you will present the sample sequence more or less intact. Copy the file. Overwrite placeholders. Do not import the theme onto a 30-slide finance outline and expect the illustrations to survive as a system.

Browse from the Google Slides hub if you want the listing, not only this comparison.

Pick SlidesCarnival if

You want a free file that still looks like a theme on slide 12. You will change two colors and a font. You refuse another account this week. You can live with a credit line if the license asks. You are building a house look for a team Drive, not hunting a medical icon set.

Carnival’s smaller catalog is the feature. You spend less time rejecting illustrated packs that will never survive a staff update. The visual habit is more professional-minimal. Recoloring is faster because fewer textures fight the hex.

If you teach and the file is a weekly notebook rather than a parent-night deck, pause—SlidesMania may be the better third bookmark. Carnival is still the better staff meeting file.

License, caps, and quality

Neither library is yours to resell as a template. Open the file, paste real headlines, check contrast. Pretty covers lie; content layouts tell the truth.

Slidesgo’s free tier is a real product with limits. Attribution on free files is common. A paid plan removes caps and unlocks more of the catalog—check the current pricing page. Carnival is typically uncapped and unsigned, but read the license on the template. Free-library credit and commercial-use language has changed over the years. Historically, personal and commercial use with credit rules was a common pattern; that is not a contract you should recite from memory.

Quality-wise, Carnival fails the “14-word title on a content layout” test less often. Slidesgo’s range is wider, so your hit rate depends on how picky you are in the filters. Volume is not the same as a higher percentage of usable masters.

How to import either file

  1. Use the official Google Slides copy or the PPTX on the publisher’s page.
  2. Existing outline → Slide → Theme → Import theme. New talk that should follow the sample → work in the copy.
  3. Recolor Theme → Colors. One accent.
  4. Keep the credit slide if the free license requires it.
  5. If fonts substitute, pick a simple pair and move on.

Theme versus template explains why import and copy feel like different products. Free Google Slides templates is the checklist version.

A realistic week of using both

Monday: you need a house theme for the team Drive. Open Carnival, copy a quiet master, recolor two hex values, save it as “House theme — do not overwrite.” That file should not come from Slidesgo unless you enjoy fighting illustrated leftovers every time someone inserts a new slide.

Wednesday: marketing needs a seasonal campaign cover with matching icons. Open Slidesgo, filter, burn one free-tier download (or use a paid plan if you already hit the cap). Copy the file if the sample sequence is the talk. Import the theme onto the house file only if you accept that the illustrated extras will not travel with the import.

Friday: someone asks which bookmark is “the official one.” The honest answer is both. Official for reusable look: Carnival. Official for a named niche this week: Slidesgo. Treating Slidesgo as the only official source is how teams empty a monthly cap on covers they reject.

If you only have time for one quality test, paste a 14-word title into a content layout and look at a section divider in grayscale. Carnival usually survives that test. Slidesgo survives it when you picked a restrained pack, not the loudest thumbnail.

When to skip both and open a third tab

Need a classroom notebook → SlidesMania. Need leftover industry volume → SlideEgg. Need one process diagram → PresentationGO. Need a prompt-written draft → Gamma. Need official Office files → Microsoft Create. Need paid diagram density → SlideModel.
